Mac

Your photos, fully yours. Iris is the native Mac photo library that helps you find, explore, and rediscover the people, places, and moments you love — privately, on your own computer, with the smarts of a cloud service and none of the cost. Photos used to live on your Mac. With Iris, they still do. Iris reads from the folders, external drives, or Photos library you already have, builds a fast, intelligent library on your Mac, and leaves your originals exactly where you put them. No cloud. No accounts. No subscription. Your memories are yours. Iris is for people who love their photos — family historians, archivists, and anyone who believes their library is worth keeping in a private, future-proof form that will outlive their grandchildren. FIND YOUR PEOPLE Iris recognizes the people in your photos using on-device machine learning — no face ever leaves your Mac. Browse by age, search by name, and watch your kids grow up. See how old everyone was the day a photo was taken, and let birthdays surface the people you love from years past. FIND YOUR PLACES Plot every photo on a map and rediscover where you've been. Jump to nearby photos, bookmark your favorite locations, and use Photo Trails to retrace your hikes, road trips, and favorite spots. FIND YOUR MOMENTS Modern cameras give you exact dates. A scanned photo from the 1980s doesn't. Iris lets you assign an approximate month, year, or decade when you don't know exactly when — so your whole family album fits inside a single timeline. MORE THAN A SEARCH BOX Search, sort, and filter by any criteria. Iris extracts the text from your photos — signs, menus, receipts, handwriting — and transcribes the speech in your videos, then makes it all instantly searchable with a fast, powerful UI that uncovers the needle in your haystack. YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY, BY THE NUMBERS Iris turns your library into a window on your life with rich stats — how many photos you take, when you take them, the cameras you use, and the people and places that show up most. BUILT LIKE A REAL MAC APP • Open as many windows and tabs as you like • List view: a fast, sortable table with configurable columns for date, camera, lens, location, file size, and dozens more • Quick switcher — hit Command-K to jump anywhere in your library • Select and copy the text straight out of your photos • Surprise Me! puts your whole library on shuffle to rediscover forgotten favorites • Share slideshows over FaceTime to gather everyone around the photos • A built-in MCP server lets Claude and other AI tools search your library — locally, with your permission 100% PRIVATE BY DESIGN Iris never edits, moves, or renames your originals. There are no accounts and no cloud servers, and no data ever leaves your Mac without your permission. The library lives on your Mac. Your memories, on your computer. Full stop. No accounts, no servers, no sign-ups, no nonsense. Made with care, on a Mac, in Richmond, Virginia, by Retina Studio.

## New - Confirm Faces window. A dedicated window (Window → Confirm Faces) for working through the faces Iris has suggested for a person. Select a person, and Iris shows a photo with their face highlighted. Is the guess correct? Answer with the Yes/No buttons or press the 1 and 2 keys on your keyboard for lightning-fast triaging. The more faces you confirm, the more Iris learns about the people in your library. - Open in Apple Photos. Items that came from an Apple Photos source get a "Photos" entry in the "Open With" menu that reveals the original in your Photos library, including items that live only in iCloud. (Currently, this feature only supports your primary Photos library.) - Redesigned Insights charts. The charts in the Insights section are now interactive — hover over a bar to see its exact count, and click one to browse those photos. Handy for jumping straight to everything captured in a given month, year, or time of day. - Last Seen. Iris now remembers which photos you've looked at. Opening an item in the inline viewer stamps it with a Last Seen date, which appears in the Metadata inspector and can be sorted and filtered on — so you can pick up a triage pass where you left off. It's great for discovering photos you've forgotten about or reviewing large libraries. - "Has Been Seen" filter. A companion to Last Seen that lets you find photos you have or have never opened. - Create a location by address. When creating a new Location from the "+" menu at the bottom of the sidebar (or from the main menu), you can type an address or place name and pick from the suggestions. Much faster and more accurate than dragging around the map. (Thanks to CL) - Filter button in the toolbar. The filter editor is now a popover that appears from a new Filter button in the toolbar, instead of hidden behind a menu item. It also has new Apply and Clear buttons that actually work the way you expect them to. ## Improved - Faster imports. Importing new items into your library is now ~20% faster and uses less memory. - Better face suggestions. Iris is now _much_ better at suggesting faces that might belong to a person. Make sure you've added at least 5 faces to a person so the recognition engine has a good sample to start learning from. You can speed up the learning process using the new Confirm Faces window. (Window → Confirm Faces) - Search improvements. Searches containing an apostrophe, comma, period, hyphen, colon, parenthesis or question mark previously failed to return results. ## Fixed - My quest to hide menu icons on macOS Tahoe accidentally removed them from the "Open With" menu, which is one place they're actually needed. This has been fixed. - Double-clicking a photo in the inline viewer now closes it, the same way double-clicking opened it. - The close button in the inline photo and video viewers moved to the top-left corner and got larger, so it no longer overlaps the video volume controls. (Thanks to AH) - Fixed thumbnails that could stop loading part-way through a large import. - Fixed the "Scanning Library" screen getting stuck when a new source was added while Iris was still processing your library. - Fixed an edge case where deleting a Source would fail to, you know, actually delete the Source. - If the API server is unable to start (e.g., the port is already in use), it will report an error rather than pretending like it started. - Fixed a brief flash of the map view in the inspector's Summary tab when selecting a photo with no location.
