This software does way more than advertised. If you simply think outside the box, or if you have a programming background, then truly the abilities for customized publications are endless. While I agree this software isn't efficient with the actual process of the research itself, I have found hands down no better tool to store and organize my research, research plans, finished products of books, custom reports, etc.... whether online, desktop software, or old school. So far, I have been using this software consistently back to MacFam 3. I've been using 11 non stop since it came out, and I'm still finding new ways that it helps me publish my work in accessible and consumable formats for all demographics of my audience. This software really needs a power users group to share some cool things you can do with just pulling this lever or that setting. One thing I would request from the maker. A subscription option for larger storage on macfamilytree online. I'm still continuing to find ways to be more efficient with my space usage! but. I also really do need more space. I tried hosting my own, but the process of set up, and expense, and just so many problems I ran into were a massive project all it's own. I was able to do it for a few years. but. I'd be willing to pay $ to bump up my storage limit from 2g. on the macfamilytree web online. thank you.

MFT 11 is an absolute pleasure to work with! The interface is sleek, intuitive, and incredibly customizable. One of my favorite features is the ability to adjust font sizes—an absolute win for older eyes (or anyone who appreciates not squinting at their screen).The customizable templates for everything are a game-changer, and features like stories, to-do lists, and influential persons bring research to life in ways I simply couldn’t achieve with other genealogy programs. It turns fragmented facts into a rich, interconnected history.Syncing? Flawless. And when it comes to mobile apps, no one else even comes close to what MFT offers. The developers’ dedication to updates and improvements throughout the year truly shows.I love everything about this software—thank you for making genealogy research such a joy!

I hoped this would have the functionality of my long-time favorite, unfortunately now-defunct, iFamily. MFT11 may be the most ambitious app yet for maintaining your own, off-line genealogy database and visualizing your data in myriad ways. It provides for entering information about almost every conceivable civil or religious event for a person. The statistical displays can be interesting: birth and death dates, life spans. Others not so much: movable 3D virtual tree. The app is NOT useful for actual research, including working with genealogy sites such as FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, and MyHeritage. The only on-line genealogy site it actually connects with is FamilySearch, where it can be used to check for matches and upload/download data. The downside: MFT11 does not appear to match FamilySearch ID numbers, which limits its useful search capability for me. The developer also recommends caution if you upload/download MFT11 data to FamilySearch. I had to check every single time to make sure my FamilySearch tree didn’t end up with duplicate persons, deceased persons uploaded as “living” to FamilySearch, children matched to step-parents as well as parents, duplicate spouses, alternate names up/downloaded as “nicknames” or “stage names.” I’m still looking for a straightforward, intuitive, stand-alone app to replace iFamily.

I’ve been using MacFamilyTree (MFT) for years. Be aware that this app is mainly for displaying and visualizing your family data—it’s not designed for actual genealogical research. It doesn’t have its own databases and can’t easily connect with major genealogy services.MacFamilyTree only syncs with FamilySearch, the free, Mormon-run site. While that can be helpful, FamilySearch is full of duplicates and inaccuracies. There’s no direct integration with MyHeritage, Ancestry, Geni, or 23andMe—only a clunky GED file import that often creates duplicate entries you’ll need to clean up manually.I’ve asked for integration with other platforms for years, but the developer hasn’t shown interest. If you mainly want to research and discover relatives, look elsewhere—an online service like MyHeritage (especially when on sale) or Ancestry will serve you better.

I have been using this software for several versions and v11 has been great at capturing all the data I want to put in and I love the charts. However, as with many of us, I use and share this data with Ancestry and MacFamilyTree cannot sync with Ancestry. You can export a gedcom database and import it into ancestry but it loses a ton of info and photos so it’s not worth trying. I tried to keep using this but unfortunately had to switch back to Family Tree Maker for the compatibility with Ancestry. If MacFamilyTree would add this sync feature I would come back in a second but for now it’s a deal breaker.

This is SOOOO much easier than Ancestry. Granted, you have to do the leg work if you want to go back generations. If, however, like me, you just want to document the folks that You’ve known during your lifetime This is wonderful. Among other things, this allows for multiple marriages, partners with whom you never married but had children, and its easy to add info as you find out new things about the people in your tree

This app is exactly what I needed to organize my basic family history and the hundreds of documents associated with my ancestors. However, one minor issue I can’t seem to find an answer for: If I set a person’s profile photo and then change my mind, what is the process to set a new profile picture? Neither the manual nor online AI provide answers that work.

I have been searching for an app to replace Family Tree Maker and I’ve finally found it! MacFamilyTree is native to Mac, the user interface is intuitive, clean, and streamlined, and the features and capabilities are not only competitive with the longstanding stalwarts of genealogy solutions, they are better. Well done!

For $70, I would’ve thought the reports and views would be more customizable. They’re pretty useless for my purposes as I find myself building my own instead. Also, not sure why it still shows birthdays on reports after they’re toggled to ‘private’. This tool is a good way to collect all the information, even if it can’t be visualized well. All in all, after using it for a month, this tool has been a disappointment, but I’m using it to get my money’s worth, if I can before I get too frustrated.

I upgraded from version 9 of MacFamily Tree because it gave alert errors on everything I touch (something about leaving the sandbox) to version 11. V.11 is way too complex and too many features. A lot of work to figure out all the changes and not easier or simpler. Wish I could go back to v8 or v9 but can’t access the datatbase. (Database error-could not be open, It has been created with newer version…). Wish the Developer would make a lite version for people who what a simple easy family tree.
