Promising note taking solution

This app has significant promise. The interface is gorgeous and I found everything it does quite easy to use. However, there are a couple of things that prevent it from being my go-to note taking application. First, I either need a directory structured organization system or tags need to nest more than one deep. I have far too many notes to have only two hierarchy levels. This is one big reason I stopped using Evernote. I would prefer more tag levels than a directory hierarchy. Second, I would like to see support for a larger set of Markdown features. Mathjax support would be phenomenal, but that’s likely not high on the feature request list. I appreciate the Markdown compatilibity mode. Using non-standard markup notations is what drove me away from Ulysses. Finally, I hate the subscription model. I don’t want to rent software. However, I can see myself paying for this application as its feature set expands.I will definitely leave Bear on my devices and continue to use it, but it’s just not quite ready to be on my critical path.UPDATE: Bear is officially my one and only note taking application. Virtually all the features I wanted to see have been added. I thought I wanted a directory-based note hierarchy, but not that I’ve used Bear’s tagging system for a while I will not go back. Finally, this app is elegant to use. Typography, UI, responsiveness is all just right. Kudos.

This is a fantastic App. I switched from Evernote and have not looked back. The simplicity of the user interface is key. With other note apps it is easy for me to lose or forget about notes because they are hidden behind layers of organization. In Bear, notes don't fall through the cracks of the interface design. It is sleek and simple, and helps tremendously with organizing ideas and finding them quickly. The best feature of Bear is the ability to organize notes relationally and not only hierarchically. With the ability to tag at sentence level, I can connect ideas across categories and later display them quickly in one search. One of the reasons I wanted to switch from Evernote is because tags could only be assigned at note level. I haven't used Evernote for a while, so perhaps this has since changed. For publishing notes, Bear is also superior with the ability to write in Markdown HTML, export as PDF, or create plaintext files. I now use Bear for work and research, and for keeping track of personal matters. Suggestions for future development: more themes (I love these!), support for tables, quick text recognition from a photo, new note from iPhone widget.

As a professional+hobbyist software developer, keeping track of all the “non-code” content relating to my software projects was an exercise in aggrevation because in order to have everything neatly partitioned (work / play), searchable (“what was that package I was looking into?"), AND presentable (“can I see all the TODOs/specification notes I’ve made on for Ticket ####?”), I had to use multiple different tools/apps and mental diciplines — and it’s no surprise it often didn’t work as planned. Bear resolved ALL of that. I spent a few hours getting everything imported the night I downloaded it, and have had zero regrets two months later.The UI is minimalist perfection — the screenshots should make that very clear. Being able to work in Markdown as the de-facto format is amazingly liberating — only needed to learn a few new keyboard shortcuts and I could enter volumes of specs/docs/pseudocode into Bear without touching the trackpad once. Ditching the building out of organizational hierarchy trees was also a great feeling: I can #hashtag-and-move-on allowing me the flexibility to have notes appear in multiple trees at once when I see fit and moving them around is as simple as editing text: being able to link between notes the same way (complete w/ autocomplete search) is also great for keeping notes “DRY”. If you are thinking about implementing a note taking regimen, or are frustrated of the one you have, "poke the bear" and see what happens! The Pro annual subscription was also an impulse upgrade for me for the PDF export and auto sync capability: though the free version is a complete solution without any show-stopper features missing or arbituary use limits.

This update is bug fixes only. We jumped straight to 3.0 because of a macOS 27 issue that breaks the UI once a version number climbs past .9 (so long, 2.10).
On the bright side, you can now tell people you use Bear 3.0 and sound extremely cool. ;)
