There are a lot of reasons on why this game is so amazing, which I will now promptly cover.First of all, many of the reviews shown are very outdated, and most of them address the chance element of this game. However, a while back the devs released a huge update where they adapted the chance element to be more strategic, so take many older reviews with a grain of salt. However, one thing that has also not been addressed by these reviews is that the game now contains micro-transactions. Most of these are purely cosmetic while some will allow players to get ahead of the competition. The game is not pay to win though, due to the many rewards that are given by simply playing the game.The best thing about this game is the gameplay itself. It’s something unique that allows players to think strategically while having lots of fun. The animation is great, with a diverse selection of cards and characters to choose from. I recommend this game to any person, no matter what preferences an individual may have, Nova Island is a game made for everyone.

I've bounced around so many other card games (Pokemon Duel, Hearthstone, Soul of Eden, PvZH, South Park PD, Marvel Snap) and this hooked me in the fastest out of all of them.First off, despite the low player counts, the game still receives regular and major updates! New cards, balance changes, etc. It's made by a small indie team that still continues even though the game has had little attention for 3 years.Second, there's almost no gambling, lootbox, card pack, rarities, or dupe card mechanics. Once you reach enough player level, you directly buy a card with a plentiful currency. The only random aspect are occasional one time bundles of several different cards that become availible to buy at a level, with the bonus of one of those cards randomly given to you for free.Also, while reading these reviews you see many complaints from years ago. They actually addressed a lot of these in a big rework update in April 2024. For example, they added an entire story campaign with event battles!On a final note, the artstyle, soundtrack, and personality of this game is incredible. Nothing ever feels half-hearted or passionless, which is such a nice change compared to big cashgrabs from big companies.So what are you waiting for? I guarantee that just trying this for a few days will be a great time.

So I want to start this out by saying that the character designs, art, concept- it’s all very cute. I really love the idea of this game! However, the gameplay itself is quite boring. I’ve played lots of different card builders, but it doesn’t feel as interesting in this game. If I had to guess, it’s the odd twist where in this game you’re racing to charge something to a capacity before your opponent using your cards. Something about this leaves me feeling bored, and left wanting to do something else. If I had a suggestion for this game it would be to overhaul the current battling system. It doesn’t feel competitive, and it doesn’t feel as though there’s any true strategy to it. People need some sort of challenge and this is just leaving me with a hole in my chest from boredom. It may sound harsh, but i’m writing this review BECAUSE I see the potential for this to become much better than it is now. It’s clear there’s a lot of love put into it, from the art, animation, and unique designs for each card. If the devs of this game see this, I hope they take this into stride and figure some way to make things more interesting.

Card battlers are probably one of the more saturated game genres on the market. This is what makes a game like Nova Island refreshing when it shakes many of the conventions found in the genre. The most apparent is that you are not planning a direct attack on your opponent's health. Instead you focus on keeping your cards alive so they can score a currency necessary to win. This simple but major change to the card battling formula creates a lot of strategy on when you should defend your cards or eliminate your opponent's cards.Sadly, the 0.11 update introduced two features that just overall make getting proper cards feel much, much more worse. The first is the addition of the Research Road, a more linear progression system that while it does help players with no friends know they can acquire all cards without attending daily challenges, has a stingy reward system where you can spend 5+ minutes in a match just to lose and earn 1/5th of a single card that you still need to spend Nova Juice on. Even after reaching the proper research road level, cards still cost Nova Juice, which can be earned in game or purchased with credits purchaseable with real money, going against the motto of "play to win." If that wasn't enough, Ranked is the only game mode that awards research novas for progressing the research road, leaving no PvE or casual avenue of progresssion. Hopefully this is adressed soon.The RNG nature of the game (energizing a friend for points) means games can be very swingy. Whether you like it or not will very much depend on the player. The game's current version is also 0.11, and the game can be content light in terms of gamemodes because of this. Give it a shot, but the stingy progression system may not be worth sticking around for.
