Andrew J. May is a social historian whose work combines urban history, cultural interpretation and public history to understand the lived experience of ordinary people. His key books include Melbourne Street Life (1998), Espresso! Melbourne Coffee Stories (2001), Federation Square (2003, with Norman Day), The Encyclopedia of Melbourne (2005, co-editor), Welsh Missionaries and British Imperialism: The Empire of Clouds in North-East India (2012), The Story of Melbourne’s Lanes (2024, co-author), and he is currently co-editing a sesquicentennial history of Government House Victoria. Across his body of work, his approach foregrounds everyday places and practices in which identity and social order are negotiated. He has served on advisory committees of the City of Melbourne, Heritage Victoria, History Council of Victoria, Melbourne Museum, National Archives of Australia, National Trust of Australia (Victoria), Public Record Office Victoria, Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and State Library of Victoria, and was Historian Member of the Victorian Heritage Council (2015-2023). Andrew teaches in the School of Historical & Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne where he has been a faculty member since 2000.
