My work lies in the field of cardiac physiology, with a central focus on the mechanisms underlying cardiac automaticity and their modulation by the autonomic nervous system.
After studying cardiac activity in mice, small lemurs and zebrafish, from 2022, I initiated a major and structuring scientific transition by developing an interdisciplinary research focused on cardiac activity in superior marine vertebrates such as cetaceans, seabirds and sea turtles. This transition was initiated by my interest for the phenomenon of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, a mechanism that should optimize body oxygenation and is particularly accentuated in superior marine vertebrates.
The transition from in lab to in situ analysis of HR in marine species was made possible by a substantial effort to develop innovative electrocardiographic tools allowing to non-invasively record electrocardiograms (ECG) under adverse condition such as underwater and at extreme depth or in remote seabird’s colonies over long duration.
