Ever since I was studying for my PhD on military organisation in Lancastrian Normandy 1422-1450 I have been fascinated by the records of medieval soldiers. My thesis included an appendix on a 1000 or so soldiers of the garrison of Rouen who I painstakingly recorded on index cards. In the mid 1980s I started putting the names onto a computer database and the rest, as they say, is history! Adrian Bell took his PhD with me at the University of Reading using computer analysis on the armies of 1387 and 1388, and then we had funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to deal with the whole period from 1369 to 1453 to produce www.medievalsoldier.org.

I have done much work on the battle of Agincourt in particular (see the Agincourt section under the About tab on the soldier site, and also my many publications. I have also put on line the Gascon rolls 1317-1467 (gasconrolls.org) and the Norman rolls of Henry V (normanrolls.org), and i edited the Parliament Rolls of Medieval England 1422-1454 which are on British History online.

I have been Chair of the Battlefields Trust, President of the Historical Association and a VP of the Royal Historical Society. Until retirement I was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Southampton. I am also Arundel Herald Extraordinary. I have given many academic papers in the UK, France. Germany, Spain, USA and Australia. I have also appeared on Radio (including four times on ‘In Our Time') and TV (including BBC4's The Hundred Years War and Yesterday Channel, Secrets of the Medieval Dead), and given many lectures to general audiences. I am always keen to receive invitations to speak.
