Atishnal Elvin Chand

I recently completed my Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Aerospace Engineering at UNSW Canberra, specializing in Space Weather. My research focused on modelling the upper atmosphere by incorporating new high-latitude physics to improve the estimation of atmospheric density.

Broadly, my research interests include the modelling of the near-Earth space environment, the impact of space weather on the upper atmosphere, high-latitude electrodynamics, uncertainty quantification, and global sensitivity analysis of atmospheric models. Through my PhD and research experience, I have developed strong expertise in advanced atmospheric modelling, computational and numerical methods, and a deep understanding of the physical processes governing space weather phenomena.

In April 2023, I participated in the Sprint Advanced Concept Training (SACT) 2023-2 as part of the Pacific Cell’s Public Satellite Research Analysis (PSRA) team, contributing to a multinational simulation exercise aimed at improving space domain awareness and operational coordination. I was responsible for identifying and verifying satellite data including launch details, orbital maneuvers, and restricted zones and collaborated with international teams using platforms such as Seradata SpaceTrak, the Unified Data Library (UDL), and Trello.

Driven by a passion for advancing space domain awareness, I am committed to leveraging satellite-based technologies to address real-world challenges across the Pacific region and the Australian space sector. With hands-on regional experience in Vanuatu, Fiji, and Australia, I bring a unique perspective and dedication to enhancing climate resilience, mitigating the impacts of tropical cyclones, and strengthening maritime security. I am enthusiastic about applying my skills to contribute to the growth and innovation of the Australian space industry, using satellite capabilities to tackle critical challenges and drive sustainable development across the Pacific.
