Bence Nemeth

Dr Bence Nemeth is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Defence Studies Department at King’s College London, where he teaches British and international military officers at the UK Defence Academy. He is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the King’s Centre for Defence Economics and Management (KCDEM).

His research focuses on defence cooperation, alliances, military capability development, and security dynamics in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. In particular, he examines the linkages between the two theatres, as well as the political economy and institutional limits of defence integration.

Dr Nemeth is the author of How to Achieve Defence Cooperation in Europe?—The Subregional Approach (Bristol University Press, 2022). His work has been published in leading journals, including International Affairs, Journal of Strategic Studies, Survival, Texas National Security Review, and Parameters. His co-authored article in Futures was featured as the key case study in NATO’s strategic foresight handbook, and he was also the lead author of the European Parliament-commissioned study Tackling Barriers to the Single Market for Defence.

His commentary has appeared in War on the Rocks, The Times, and The Conversation. His media appearances include CNN, NBC News, The Wall Street Journal, BBC, France 24, and leading regional outlets across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Dr Nemeth is frequently invited to lecture at military staff colleges overseas and has delivered sessions in Brunei, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Qatar, and South Korea. He previously served as Academic Programme Director of the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC), the flagship postgraduate programme of the UK’s Joint Services Command and Staff College. Before joining King’s, he worked as a defence planner in the Hungarian Ministry of Defence for eight years and taught at the Hungarian National Defence University.

Dr Nemeth earned his PhD in Defence Studies from King’s College London and holds an MBA in Defence Systems Management from the US Navy’s Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
