Bernadette McBride

Bernadette McBride is a writer, director, academic (Liverpool Hope University and the University of Liverpool), and freelance creative practitioner. She won Liverpool Guild's Biggest Impact on the City award in 2019 for her public engagement work, and was shortlisted for the Manchester Fiction Prize in 2020 (worth 10k) and the “Best UK Nature-Based Social Prescribing Project” in 2022. She is the author of Roots: Eco-Journal (2019) and the short story collection Birds Are Liars (2025). Her short story Sea Monster was adapted into a multi-festival-selected film.

Her research interests are around environment, emotion & affect in contemporary literature (especially short fiction), more-than-human narratives, eco-spirituality, literature and science, creative writing pedagogy and public engagement with writing and environmental themes, writing and wellbeing, and writing and public health.
