Daniel J. Sherman

I am an interdisciplinary scholar working at the border between history, especially that of modern France, and art history. I have published books on the history of art museums, World War I commemoration, and the fate of cultural primitivism in the age of decolonization; my most recent book, just published by U. of Chicago Press, looks at archaeology's entanglement with the media through two controversies in early 20th-century France. My teaching ranges widely over the histories of European modernism, art museums, and social memory. Two of my books have won multiple prizes, and my research has been supported by Guggenheim, NEH, and ACLS fellowships, as well as residencies at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), the National Humanities Center, the Institut d'Études Avancées (Paris), and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (Washington).
