Danny Kingsley

Dr Danny Kingsley is an expert in strategy and policy in the higher education and research sector with extensive international experience. Her work involves aspects of advocacy, professional development, research and communication through developing relationships with all levels of the scholarly communication landscape, from the individual researcher, to editors and publishers of journals and monographs, funding bodies, research institutions and government. Her research as a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science centres on scholarly communication with interests in the academic reward structure, scholarly infrastructure and open access advocacy. Danny is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University. She sits on multiple committees and has written extensively and presented all over the world in this area.

Danny is Director of Library Services (Information) at Deakin University and an Ambassador for the OAPEN Library of open access books. She has worked as a Scholarly Communication Consultant since her return to Australia in 2019, most recently with the OAPEN library of open access books and Directory of Open Access Books Foundation. She has held contracts with Griffith University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland, QUT, University of the Sunshine Coast and Australian Academy of Sciences. She also worked as Associate Librarian, Content and Digital Library Strategy at Flinders University between 2021-2022.

Between 2015-2019, Danny worked as the Deputy Director of Cambridge University Libraries (Scholarly Communication & Research Services). Before moving to the UK she established the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group (now Open Access Australasia). This followed on from working for four years as the Manager of Scholarly Communication at the Australian National University, a natural extension of her 2008 PhD into the range of ways different disciplines engage with open access. During her PhD she worked as an Associate Lecturer (part-time) in science communication. She lectured in undergraduate and masters courses and for the Questacon Science Circus Graduate Diploma at CPAS from 2006-2013.

Danny worked in the media as a science communicator for a decade, before returning to study. She worked for two years with ABC Science Online as a journalist for News in Science, and as a co-producer of Health Matters. She has experience in TV, radio and print.
