Devin Smart

Devin Smart’s research examines the history of the environment and capitalism in modern Africa. His first book explores how capitalism created a new urban food system in Mombasa, Kenya’s port city on the Indian Ocean. He is currently working on two additional book projects, one that is an environmental history of Kenya’s commercial fisheries and another that explores East Africa’s energy transitions during the twentieth century. Dr. Smart is a faculty member in the Department of History at West Virginia University where he teaches courses on African, European, and global history.
