Dominic Bryan

Dominic Bryan is a Professor of Anthropology at Queen’s University Belfast. He was Director of the Institute of Irish Studies from 2002-2016, and formerly co-chair of the all-party Commission on Flags, Identity, Culture and Tradition (2016-2020). Dominic is an anthropologist researching political rituals, symbols, commemoration, public space, identity, conflict and peace building. From 1991 he has conducted detailed research on symbols and rituals in Northern Ireland (see Orange Parades, Pluto Press 2000 and Civic identity and public space: Belfast since 1780, Manchester University Press 2019). Dominic is presently managing a project, in conjunction with Co-Operation Ireland, evaluating the Communities in Transition program run by The Executive Office. Dominic was a member of the Living Memorial Museum sub-group of Healing Through Remembering and is part of several research projects examining processes of commemoration. He has also worked with the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, the Community Relations Council and was chair of Diversity Challenges until 2023.
