My research focusses on the relationship between dissolved metals and both natural and engineered surfaces. I investigate how metals bind with the mineral and organic components of soils and sediments to understand how contaminants and bio-essential metals move through the environment. I also explore how surfaces can be modified or engineered to selectively take up metals of interest, which is useful for both contaminant removal and in minerals processing to isolate metals of interest.
I enjoy science communication and making studying and working in engineering more accessible and inclusive. I have presented my work to everyone from a Nobel Laureate (at Australia’s inaugural Falling Walls Lab) through to the general public through the Radio National Science Show, A Pint of Science and The Conversation.
