Fabrizio Alberti

Fabrizio is based in the School of Life Sciences of the University of Warwick, where his group conducts research on specialised metabolites from fungi. These are organic compounds made by all living organisms that are not essential for their growth and development but provide an advantage in their ecological interactions with other organisms.

Fabrizio’s group uses a combination of genomics, genetic engineering and analytical chemistry to discover new specialised metabolites, as well as understand their biosynthesis and refactor it to make analogues with improved bioactivity that can find application in medicine and crop protection. The group is also interested in the development of engineering tools to genetically manipulate and exploit fungi, including the mushroom-forming Basidiomycota.

Fabrizio is an active member of the Microbiology Society as an elected member of the Eukaryotic Division. He is also an editorial board member of the journal Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology and a founding editorial board member of the journal Microbiology Outlooks.
