Gavin Charles Young

Gavin Young is currently based in the Department of Materials Physics [formerly Applied Mathematics], ANU Research School of Physics, which developed and maintains high resolution XCT scanning and 3D printing facilities. These can be used to analyse internal structure of fossils, including ancient braincase morphology of fossil vertebrates from Australia, China, and elsewhere. This research attracted continuous ARC funding to ANU from 2004-2014.

Young has researched early vertebrate fossils for more than 50 years, conducting geological investigations and fieldwork all over the world, resulting in more than 200 research publications.

He received the Mawson Medal of the Academy of Science, and WR Browne Medal of the Geological Society of Australia in 2014 for his contributions to Australian geology.
