Gerry McCartney

I trained in Medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2001 (MBChB). During my early career in medicine I completed an degree in Development and Economics (BSc Hons) at the University of London by distance learning. I worked for a time as a General Practitioner in Paisley and trained in public health, gaining professional qualifications in each (DRCOG, MRCGP, MFPH, FFPH), and a Masters in Public Health (MPH) and doctorate of medicine (MD) researching the health impacts of hosting major sports events. I led the Scottish Public Health Observatory team at the national agencies for Public Health in Scotland between 2010 and 2021, gaining a PhD on the impacts of austerity on mortality trends from the Adam Smith Business School at the University of Glasgow in 2022. In 2021 I was appointed as Professor of Wellbeing Economy at the University of Glasgow.
