Hayley J. Fowler

Hayley J. Fowler is an internationally recognised leader in hydroclimatic extremes. She has transformed understanding of extreme rainfall and flood risk through pioneering work on convection-permitting climate models and the first global dataset of hourly rainfall extremes. Her research has provided critical evidence for the intensification of short-duration rainfall under climate change and delivered new approaches for translating climate science into practical adaptation and resilience planning.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, and has key roles in international climate science and policy, contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Sixth Assessment Report. She received the 2024 European Geosciences Union Sergey Soloviev Medal, has held a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and currently holds a 2025 Royal Society Faraday Discovery Fellowship.

From 2021-2023, she was President of the British Hydrological Society, bridging between hydrological, meteorological and climate communities with her role as Chair of the Met Office Hadley Centre Climate Programme Science Review and Advisory Group. She has advised UK government on the Strategic Advisory Board for the RESAS Division in Scotland and on the DESNZ Science Expert Group. She currently serves on the UK Climate Change Committee.
