Helena Goodwyn

I am currently Assistant Professor of English Literature and Creative Writing at Northumbria University, a post I took up in 2023 following a Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellowship at the same institution.

My research specialises in nineteenth-century literature and culture, with particular emphasis on periodical studies, transatlantic print networks, sensation fiction, women’s writing, and the intersections of journalism and empire. My monograph 'The Americanisation of W. T. Stead' was published by Edinburgh University Press in July 2026. Alongside this, I have published widely in leading journals and edited collections, including the Journal of Victorian Culture, Victorian Periodicals Review, Women’s Writing, and Nineteenth-Century Gender Studies.

I am a Board member of the British Women Writers Association, serve on the Advisory Council for the Institute of English Studies, and act as an Expert Advisor for AQA. I am an editor for the Journal of European Periodical Studies and have previously served as an elected Board member for the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals, where I regularly chair prize committees and organise international scholarly events.

Beyond the university, I remain committed to widening participation and public engagement. I work with schools and charities to promote access to higher education, lead funded internship schemes to develop students’ digital and archival skills, and have contributed to radio broadcasts and public lectures on Victorian culture and media history.
