Ibai Ieltxu Rico Lozano

Ibai Rico has a PhD in glaciology from the University of the Basque Country. He has had the opportunity to study glaciers and mountains in Patagonia, Peru, Svalbard and the Pyrenees. Currently he continues to conduct studies on snowpack evolution, glacial evolution and mountain permafrost. He is also doing outreach on the topic of how climate change is impacting mountaineering activities such as alpinism, skiing, or mountain guiding.

Ibai has extensive experience with fieldwork in remote environments, including a National Geographic-funded expedition to explore the southernmost ice field in South America. Nowadays, Ibai combines his work as professor with working as IFMGA mountain guide. He is also associated as safety coordinator with the scientific program JIRP (Juneau Icefield Research Program) in the Juneau Icefield, Alaska. Finally, Ibai is highly involved in outreach and networking, participating in two ongoing ENLIGHT projects and also serving as a POW (Protect Our Winters) Austria Scientific Ambassador.
