James David Pickering

James Pickering is an Assistant Professor in Physical Chemistry and Deputy Education Director at the University of Leicester. His interests are in ultrafast laser spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, data analysis and modelling, and scientific education. Most of his projects involve development of scientific instruments and analysis methods, or developing new and interesting ways to communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. He has won a number of awards for his teaching and scientific writing, and has received funding from the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Prior to Leicester, James worked in both research and teaching roles at the University of Oxford and Aarhus University, and has previously taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He believes passionately in widening participation in STEM, and has led a number of EDI initiatives at Leicester with this aim.
