James Novak

Dr James Novak is a biomedical designer and researcher with over 10 years experience in additive manufacturing (aka. 3D printing). He is currently the Senior Research Fellow in CranioFacial Biofabrication at the Herston Biofabrication Institute, based within the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he leads research into neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery applications of 3D printing. He is also an Adjunct Lecturer in the new design program within the School of Architecture at The University of Queensland, and an Assistant Editor of the Computer-Aided Design and Applications journal.

James has previously been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Deakin University (School of Engineering) and the University of Technology Sydney (School of Design), as well as a lecturer at Griffith University. He has completed additional training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA, and Lund University in Sweden, and published over 30 articles on 3D printing and associated digital technologies

In 2014 James designed and 3D printed the world's first full-size bicycle frame, winning the prestigious Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award at RAPID, North America's largest annual 3D printing conference and expo. This bike was exhibited around the world at venues including the Red Dot Design Museum in Germany, and BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Belgium. He has also been an Advance Queensland Community Digital Champion and run numerous community workshops on 3D printing.
