I'm a sociologist and criminologist based in London. I've written extensively about the role of women in the drug trade. 'Drug Mules: Women in the International Cocaine Trade' won the British Society of Criminology book prize in 2015. I'm regularly interviewed in media in relation to women's involvement in the interntional drug trade. I've also has acted as an expert witness in the Crown Court in Engand and Wales, and have written expert statements for Reprieve, the anti-death penalty NGO.

A second area of research specialism is people talking about personal experiences of crime - aka personal nartratives about crime. I've co-edited two collections on the topic: 'The Emerald Handbook of Narrative Criminology' (2019) and 'Narrating Justice and Hope: How Good Stories Counter Crime and Harm' (2025). More recently, 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Crime' (2024) examined the phenomenon of people speaking about crime in public, especially on social media, podcasting, documentary and television.

I'm an editor at British Journal of Criminology, and Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal. As well as writing for The Conversation, I have written for the Independent and Vice. I have appeared on podcasts, radio and live television.
