Joan Fitzpatrick

I am a Reader in Renaissance Literature at Loughborough University. I was awarded my PhD (on Edmund Spenser's epic poem 'The Faerie Queene') from the University of Birmingham in 1997 and since then I have taught at a number of universities both here in the UK and abroad. My research is focused on early modern literature, including Shakespeare, dietary culture, and (more recently) late medieval literature.

My latest book is entitled 'Receiving the Stranger in Shakespeare: Hospitality and Hostility in the Plays' (Routledge, 2025).

I specialise in teaching early modern literature but I teach all periods (from the late medieval period onwards) and would welcome doctoral research students in any area of early modern and/or late medieval literary culture.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA).
