John Drury

John Drury completed his first degree at the University of Sussex, and his MSc and PhD at the University of Exeter. He has also studied and worked at the University of Amsterdam, the University of Abertay Dundee, and the Trust for the Study of Adolescence. He came back to Sussex in 1998, where he is Professor of Social Psychology.

John has expertise on crowd behaviour -- in social movements, riots, mass emergencies, and live events. His work on collective resilience in mass emergencies has been used in guidance and training by the UK Fire & Rescue Service, the Government Communication Service, and crowd safety training around the world. He runs a continued professional development course for event safety professionals on Crowd Psychology for Crowd Safety Management. Organisations and departments he has worked with include Safe Events (Global), UK Health Security Agency, Square Metre Crowd Safety Training, the Emergency Planning College, the Sports Ground Safety Authority, the UK Crowd Management Association, the European Space Agency, Movement Strategies, the Greater London Authority, the Department for Transport, and the National Crisis Center Belgium
