Joshua W. Pate, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Physiotherapy at the University of Technology Sydney. His research explores how children understand pain, how those ideas influence their experiences and behaviour, and how pain science can be communicated clearly to children, families, clinicians and educators.

He developed the Concept of Pain Inventory (COPI) and leads research into pain education, child and family health, and the quality and safety of artificial intelligence in health care. He also leads the UTS Health AI Research Node.

Joshua has worked with TED-Ed on two animations viewed millions of times, co-founded the pain science interview platform One Thing, and written several children’s books about pain. His work aims to make contemporary pain science clearer, kinder and more useful.
