Josiane Fernandes

(She/Her)

Josi Fernandes studies how markets are organised, how they change, and how place and space shape that process. A central theme in her work is how markets can be reorganised to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Her research explores sustainability across different industries, including tourism and food. Recent projects have looked at how local communities in Rio de Janeiro's favelas shape and take part in the tourism market, and how local entrepreneurs manage to build livelihoods despite stigma, violence, and poverty and what the consequences of this are. This work has appeared in academic journals (Journal of Business Research, British Journal of Management, and Marketing Theory) as well as public platforms including the London School of Economics (LSE) blog and the World Economic Forum.
Her current projects focus on food accessibility in everyday diets in Northwest England, and on environmental concerns in the Scottish salmon industry.
