Karen Dwyer

I have been in clinical practice for ~30 years with over 20 in the field of clinical nephrology and 4 in lifestyle medicine with an emphasis on prevention, health-span and well-being. The hallmark of my professional practice is the transformational effect I have on patients, through providing cutting-edge and evidence-based treatments, advocating, and partnering with them to be invested in their own wellness. I have a strong record in research as a lead investigator and collaborator. I lead solutions-driven research with teams that are multifaceted and cross disciplinary. I am an active contributor to education that spans form medical student to peer learning. I am skilled in making the complex easy to understand. I am an advocate for gender equity and supporting marginalised communities to access optimum health care.
Fields of research
• Kidney health and disease:
o Purinergic signalling; epigenetics, metabolomics and gut microbiome in diabetes kidney disease; transplantation; AI in predicting the progression of chronic kidney disease; relationship of micro and nanoplastics to human health
• Public health and health systems:
o The development of a roadmap for implementation of novel models of healthcare delivery.
• Metabolic health:
o Microbiome analysis in individuals with metabolic syndrome; metabolic health immersion for Medical Education.
• Medical technologies:
o The development of imprinted membranes for the direct removal of drugs (such as paracetamol) in the setting of acute toxicity; the development of a novel cell-based screening tool to reduce the impact of bowel cancer.
