Katie Milestone

Dr Katie Milestone is a Sociologist of Media and Culture. She has research interests in youth subcultures, music, gender and popular culture and has published widely in this filed.

Katie began her academic career as a PhD candidate at the Manchester Institute for Popular Culture (MIPC) researching the role of popular culture, notably popular music, in the re-imaging of the de-industrialising city. This research focussed on the micro creative industries in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. Supervised by Justin O’Connor, Derek Wynne and Steve Redhead.

Her research interests coalesce around three interlinking areas;

Popular music culture: Northern Soul, Manchester and ‘Madchester’, Night club histories, Subcultures
Gender and popular culture: gender and Creative Industries
Place and identity: northernness
