Kevin Omland

The Omland Lab studies a range of topics in avian evolution, behavior and conservation. Most of our work has focused on New World orioles (Icterus), including studies of their evolutionary relationships, speciation, hybridization and conservation (esp. Bahama Oriole Project). Our recent research has emphasized elaborate female coloration and female song. Along with collaborators, we have shown that female song is widespread and likely ancestral in songbirds. Recent projects focus on female song in Eastern Bluebirds and in the Puerto Rican Oriole. Kevin Omland recently published a book the Cambridge University Press "Understanding Life" series. The book is titled "Understanding the Tree of Life" was published in Sept. 2025
