Khalid Beshir

Dr Beshir is a genomic epidemiologist with a background in Biology, Medical Parasitology and Biomedical Science.

Dr Beshir’s research focuses on understanding how malaria parasites develop resistance to antimalarial medicines and evade detection by rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). His laboratory develops practical, affordable molecular and genomic tools to identify these parasites and monitor their spread, particularly in countries where malaria remains a major public health challenge.

Dr Beshir has also contributed to the development of affordable COVID-19 diagnostic tests suitable for low- and middle-income countries. During the pandemic, he supported laboratories in these countries to detect and monitor emerging COVID-19 variants using next-generation genomic sequencing.
