Kim Gurney’s research relates to contemporary art, the city, and the public sphere. She is the author of four books about independent art practice – most recently, ‘Flipside: The Inadvertent Archive’ (iwalewabooks), which follows the paper trail of one of South Africa’s oldest art associations and non-profit galleries. Her work engages pan-African independent art spaces and other kinds of ‘offspaces’ - artist studios, artisanal workshops, backroom archives and the like - as fugitive knowledge vectors. She focuses upon artistic thinking and how it can intervene in other fields and disciplines.
