Mark Turner

Mark’s research explores football-based social movements with a specific focus on fans; community; political economy; place; and globalisation. He is particularly interested in the role of generations in social movement activism and the impact of historical events on generational memories ontological security, and intergenerational bonds. Mark has published various articles, papers, and books in these areas, including recent papers in the British Journal of Sociology; and Sociology on football; generations and social change (1985-2023) and the European Super League. He is the author of the monograph ‘The Safe Standing Movement in English football’ (2023) and co-editor of ‘Social Control and Disorder in Football’ (2024). His two new books on ‘Deconstructing the Role of Generations in Social Movements’ (Routledge) and ‘Societal Dynamics of Athletes and Fan-based Activism’ (Amsterdam University Press) will be published in 2025
