Matteo Vergani

Dr Matteo Vergani is Associate Professor at Deakin University and Director of the Tackling Hate Lab (www.tacklinghate.org). His work focuses on tackling hate and extremist violence, and promoting peace and inclusion in diverse communities. He investigates what drives—and what protects people from—prejudice, discrimination, hate speech, hate crime, and terrorism. Matteo’s research is grounded in solid evidence and rigorous methods. He leads evidence reviews, develops validated tools to measure complex social issues, and runs industry-focused projects in partnership with government agencies, community organisations and tech sector. Matteo is passionate about using AI and emerging tech to improve social research and inform practical solutions.
