Matthew is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne and UMC Utrecht (The Netherlands), and a Palliative Medicine Physician at St Vincent's Hospital. He is involved in post-graduate and medical education through the University of Melbourne. He is also a clinical reference lead for the Australian Digital Health Agency.

He is currently involved in research examining the attitudes surrounding morphine use in cancer care, examining issues around communication, decision making and end of life ethics. Areas of interest involve health practice ethics, end of life care, improving communication and systems between primary and palliative care.
