Mulatu Alemayehu Moges

Mulatu Alemayehu Moges is currently an associate professor of Journalism and Communication in the Department of Global Development and Planning at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway. He has been serving OsloMet University from August 2023 to 2025 in a similar position. He was also involved in the project at OsloMet University in Oslo titled Decoding Digital Media in Africa Conflict (DDMAC), which the Norwegian Research Council funded.
He completed his PhD in Media and Communication at the University of Oslo in 2017, specialising in media and internal conflict in Ethiopia. His MA in Journalism and Communication is from Addis Ababa University, where he served as a lecturer from 2008 to 2023 and as an Assistant Professor from 2018 to 2023. He has taught a range of courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has served on the examining committees for MA and PhD students at Addis Ababa University and other universities.
Mulatu has an extensive understanding of Ethiopian media. He has been a media practitioner for ten years. He has researched the Ethiopian media, focusing on the media landscape; freedom of expression and the press; the safety of journalists; media plurality and diversity; conflict-sensitive reporting; gender and gender-based violence; media and ethnicity; media and religion; media and elections; reports; and other related issues. He has published several articles on these and other topics. He has presented his research findings at national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops. Additionally, he has supported Ethiopian media by facilitating several training workshops on various themes. He has also led many research and capacity-building projects.
Regarding program coordination, Mulatu has strong leadership and coordination skills. He was a PhD program Coordinator (2019-2021) and an assistant Dean (2011-2013) at the School of Journalism and Communication in Addis Ababa. He was a coordinator for the NORPART program (2016-2023), a capacity-building initiative that supports Ethiopian higher education.
Mulatu has also served as a consultant for both local and international organisations. His research interests include the political economy of the media, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, journalists' safety, peace journalism, conflict-sensitive reporting, ethnicity, religion, elections, hate speech, misinformation, social media, and gender.
