Professor Phillips has a range of research interests in the historical and contemporary dimensions of sport. He has written on the historical and contemporary aspects of First Nations sport, identity and culture, as well as the ontological, epistemological and methodological aspects of sport history.
With these interests in mind, Professor Phillips has received external funding from the Australian Research Council, Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Coaching Council, and the Australian War Memorial.
He is a Chief Investigator on two ARC Discovery projects: "Pride, Resilience and Identity: Reimagining Aboriginal Sport History" (DP190100647: 2019-2024) and “Torres Strait Islander History: Sport, Culture and Identity” ((DP230102268: 2023-2025).
