Nicholas Jenkins

I am a sociologist working in dementia studies and anthrozoology. I conduct and supervise research that explores our relations with animals and how these affect health, illness and wellbeing. My work is informed by multi-species scholarship and uses multi-species methodologies to explore human and more than human experiences of health, wellbeing, illness and disease. Along with Dr Anna Jack-Waugh and Dr Louise Ritchie, I co-convene the Multi-Species Dementia International Research Network (https://multispeciesdementia.org/).

My current research focuses on the rise of animal assisted interventions (AAIs) across health and social care. I have worked with Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Dog project to explore how human-canine relations affect the lived experience of dementia. I am commencing a short-term, multi-species ethnography of human-donkey relations and their impact on wellbeing, at a farmed animal sanctuary (FAS) for elderly and retired equids in Southern Scotland.
