I am Dr Oliver Hamer, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specialising in obesity, weight management, and behavioural health. I completed my PhD in Weight Management in 2020, developing expertise in the epidemiology of obesity and the complex psychological, social, and environmental factors that influence weight gain, weight loss, and weight maintenance.

My research focuses on advancing the understanding of effective weight management strategies across the life course, with a particular interest in how behavioural and psychological factors shape health-related decision-making and sustainable behaviour change. I am passionate about developing evidence-based approaches that move beyond simplistic models of weight loss to recognise the multifaceted nature of obesity as a chronic and relapsing condition.

Throughout my academic career, I have worked across a range of obesity and public health research projects, applying both quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the determinants of obesity and identify interventions that can support individuals in achieving and maintaining healthier weights. I have published over 45 peer review journal articles, some of which have contributed to the evidence base surrounding weight management services, behavioural interventions, and population-level approaches to obesity prevention.

I am particularly interested in understanding how individuals experience weight management interventions and how these insights can be used to improve engagement, and long-term outcomes. I also have a strong interest in the role of psychological interventions, including behaviour change techniques, motivation, self-regulation, and wellbeing, in supporting successful and sustained weight reduction.
