Peter JS Jones

Dr Peter Jones is Emeritus Professor of Environmental Governance in the Department of Geography, University College London (UCL). He has spent over 30 years undertaking transdisciplinary research on the governance of human uses of marine resources, particularly in relation to marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine spatial planning (MSP).

He has provided advice to many national and international organisations on MPA and MSP-related issues, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Convention on Biological Diversity, the European Commission and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He recently published the book 'Governing Marine Protected Areas: resilience through diversity' (2014, Routledge, (bit.ly/GoverningMPAs), drawing on 20 UNEP funded MPA case studies around the world.

He led a work programme on different governance approaches in the context of marine spatial planning as part of a project on the monitoring and evaluation of spatially managed marine areas, involving 12 case studies around Europe (tinyurl.com/MSPinReality). He is also a Committee Member of the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.
