Philippa Irvine

I am a Human Geographer based at Rhodes University in South Africa. My research and teaching interest is best framed within urban and cultural geography. I am particularly interested in ‘place’. Place-making, place-identity, place-branding, and urban scenes spark my curiosity. In addition, I have developed a focus on cultural and built environment heritage and its conservation.

My professional work has led me to active involvement in community-led initiatives in Makhanda like Verge of Change, Friends of Bots and the Makana Business and Residents Association. I also serve on the Makana Local Municipality Aesthetics and Conservation Committee (heritage conservation) and the Ward 8 Committee.
