Sara Fregonese

Dr Fregonese is Associate Professor of Political Geography at the University of Birmingham. She is a geographer with a Middle Eastern Studies background. Her research is on urban conflict, terrorism and counterterrorism, and more broadly the impacts and implications of geopolitics on urban built environments, security practices, and lived experiences.
She is the author of War and The City. Urban Geopolitics in Lebanon (Bloomsbury 2019) and of The Radicals’ City. Urban environment, polarisation, cohesion (Routledge 2016, with Ralf Brand). Between 2021 ad 2024 she was Principal Investigator of the ESRC/ORA research project Atmospheres of (counter-)terrorism in European cities (www.atmoct.org), a mixed-methods study exploring the felt dimensions of contemporary terror threats and counterterrorism measures in the ordinary experience of cities in Europe.
