Stephen Gaunson

Stephen Gaunson is an Associate Professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University, where he serves as the Director of Higher Degrees Research for the College of Design and Social Context. His academic focus encompasses cinema studies, with a particular interest in both national and international film industries. Stephen's research delves into the social aspects of cinema-going, and he is currently co-leading a project on the history of Hoyts Cinemas in Australia, supported by a significant grant.

In his teaching role, Stephen offers undergraduate courses on adaptation, documentary, national cinema, and film history. He also supervises postgraduate students in these areas. Beyond academia, he contributes to public discourse as a film industry commentator on platforms like ABC Melbourne and Radio National.

Stephen's publications include "The Ned Kelly Films" (2013), and he has co-edited collections on film exhibition and distribution history. His research interests span Australian cinema, film adaptation, silent cinema, and classical Hollywood. He has also been involved in script editing for Irish film company De Facto Films, contributing to award-winning features such as "Kings" (2007) and "Dead Long Enough" (2005).

Stephen regularly writes film commentary articles for national outlets including The Conversation, The Canberra Times, and Senses of Cinema.
