Wolfgang Messner

Wolfgang Messner is Clinical Professor of International Business at the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina (US). His interdisciplinary background combines business and computer science, with degrees from leading European institutions: a Ph.D. in Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Kassel (Germany), an MBA in Financial Management from the University of Wales (UK), and B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Informatics following studies at the Technical University of Munich (Germany), the University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), and the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (Italy).

As a computational social scientist, Messner applies artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced statistical techniques to research questions in international business, marketing, and cross-cultural communication. His work has appeared in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Applied Soft Computing, International Business Review, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, Journal of International Management, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, and Journal of World Business, among others. He is the author of five books and editor of three academic handbooks published by Palgrave Macmillan and Springer. His pedagogical contributions include several global marketing and business teaching cases published by Ivey Publishing and SAGE Business Cases Originals.

Before joining the University of South Carolina in 2016, Messner was Professor of International Management at the MYRA School of Business in Mysore (India). He has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at the Indian Institutes of Management (Bangalore, Indore, and Kozhikode), Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg (Germany), WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management (Germany), and the University of East London’s Royal Docks Business School (UK). He co-founded GloBus Research, a niche consulting and training firm based in the UK and India, to help organizations address challenges in international business and leadership.

Prior to his academic career, Messner spent 18 years in industry, holding roles as a business analyst, project manager, and management consultant with Capgemini, BMW Group, The Information Management Group (IMG), and Deutsche Bank. Based in Germany with two expatriate postings in India, his work also spanned assignments across Western and Eastern Europe, Singapore, and the United States.
