Yuan An works mainly on topics in labor economics and public economics, using empirical evidence and economic theory.

His current research focuses on the economics of labor markets of new forms and structures departing from standard economic theory, in particular how these markets function fundamentally differently from traditional markets, and efficiency and incidence of institutions designed to adapt to new market features in these markets.
